Give the Gift of Time This Valentine’s Day
Posted on February 9, 2016 by Angela Weisser
You want a heartfelt Valentine’s Day gift to be thoughtful – something to let that special someone know just how much you value their place in your life. But the stores are full of flowers, chocolates and other things they don’t really need and might not want. So after years of giving stuff, what else is there to offer?
Time is the one thing we all seem to have less of to go around, which means it’s the most valuable thing we can give. Our residents at Atria would say it’s what the people you love want more than “stuff.”
That’s why we’ve spent some time coming up with simple, thoughtful ways on how to give yours. Gifts of time are about making time to connect and having fun together.
When you were a child, chances are that your parents gave you a special treat or planned an activity for you around Valentine’s Day. You’re all grown up now but why not show them how much you care and do something special for them this year? Arrange a spa day with Mom or take a Sunday drive with Dad. Create a space to engage one-on-one.
You can also use our ideas as a way to start traditions – not just on Valentine’s Day but throughout the year. If you love scrapbooking, invite the family to join you at the end of each year to choose photos and help with design. Offer to refresh your parents’ garden each spring, and plant an array of bright, cheery flowers. You can even grab a friend and volunteer once a month – people in need can benefit from your time, too.
There’s no wrong way to give your time. Use our ideas any time you want to surprise and delight your nearest and dearest. Have fun with our suggestions or dream up your own thoughtful ways to show someone you care.
No matter how you choose to spend time with your favorite people this Valentine’s Day, remember that giving your time lets them know they’re valued – and makes you feel good.
