We would like to express our sincere gratitude to the courageous service members who have earned the Purple Heart Medal in combat.
Purple Heart Facts
The award’s origins go back to August 7, 1782 when General George Washington created the Badge for Military Merit, made from a purple, heart-shaped piece of silk.
It was forgotten until 1931 when General MacArthur reinstated and redesigned the award, adding the image of Washington. It soon became known as the Purple Heart.
The first official Purple Heart was awarded in 1932, and there have been nearly 2,000,000 Purple Hearts awarded since.
