My mother-in-law lived at MerryWood for 2.5 years and my mother is still living at MerryWood, after nearly three years. While no place is perfect, there are several distinctions that should be considered about MerryWood. The location on Park Road is exceptional - near banks, shopping, restaurants, churches, and within easy access of uptown Charlotte. The apartments are well laid out - far more so than in the nearly fifteen communities we visited. The one-bedroom apartments are "real" apartments, designed without emphasis on squeezing in as many people as some communities do. In particular, my mother loves her balcony and tends a garden of seasonal flowers all year. The ability to walk to a central elevator and then take a short walk to a common dining room - without walking outside - is a much bigger positive than you might initially consider. The number and variety of activities is remarkable - far better than many communities. Some activities are "simple" but well done. The exercise offerings are excellent, and the grounds provide a safe and beautiful place to walk. The food is good, but the most important thing is that MerryWood ensures that all residents are welcomed at meals. "Holding seats" is not allowed, and the host or hostess always does a good job of seating residents with companions with whom they have common interests. The housekeeping staff is attentive. Finally, the rental model fits real needs better than an ownership model.

It's been exactly one month since our mother moved into MerryWood, a decision she came to on her own. When she told us she was ready to leave her home of 40+ years we started looking and after one visit to MerryWood we felt we had found the perfect home for her. The staff was friendly and fun. The residents seemed happy and the apartment was lovely. Mom had just been diagnosed with Aphasia which affects her communication skills and memory. She needed help with everything. Immediately the staff at MerryWood responded to her needs. She had almost stopped eating before the move and now she eats a good meal three times a day (the food is great!). She is getting physical therapy right there on-site and is already walking better and getting stronger. We hadn't realized how stressed she was living alone and now she is smiling again and enjoying life. We couldn't be happier! I would like to give a personal thanks to Denise who originally showed us around. We fell in love with her immediately! Also Billy who made everything right in the apartment. The restaurant staff already knows what she likes and treats her with such care. It's important that the family enjoys visiting and feels welcome and we absolutely do. If you are considering MerryWood for a loved one you will not regret the decision. They truly care.

I have spent most of my waking hours over the past few weeks at Atria MerryWood, first moving my parents' furniture and belongings to their new apartment and then helping my parents make their transition to living there. We are grateful and thrilled by this move. Everyone from staff to residents are pleasant, helpful and supportive. The food is excellent and there are support services available which include assistance with bathing, washing clothes, house keeping, hearing aids and the list goes on. My parents have everything they need including worship services, a happy hour, live music, movies and are making new friends - all within just a few steps from their door. After just eight days into their transition to life at MerryWood, their outlook on life has improved; they are much less fearful about what the day holds and they appear more vital and alive. Atria MerryWood has been a life-changer for all of us. My parents are safe, cared for and happy. When I leave after our visits, I no longer carry worry in my heart; I carry a smile. We love Atria MerryWood!

Spent quite a bit of time researching options for my 89 year old father who was suddenly in need of a change in living arrangements. Should have started at MerryWood first as there is no question that the right choice was there. From initial tours with the patient expertise of Denise Cobb, to the final tour with Dad and family members I knew it was a fit. Residents are happy and thriving and the overall feeling of "Home" is present when under the MerryWood roof. I am hopeful that my Dad will be able to enjoy his golden years full of happiness and comfort at this wonderful facility.

I spoke with Joshua Bigby when trying to determine whether or not Merrywood would be a good fit for my mother. After several emails and a long telephone conversation in which Joshua patiently described the amenities and advantages of the different levels of care, we determined that my mother might be best served to stay where she is for now. But even given that, Joshua offered several different options for memory care for my mother when we decided it was time for her to move.
