When a major snowstorm hit Barrington in late February, it brought more than two feet of snow in just two days. Conditions were difficult across the area, and many people stayed home.
At Atria Bay Spring Village, the focus stayed on the people who call the community home.
For Hakan, a driver and Engage Life team member, the storm wasn’t just about the weather. It was about making sure residents felt safe, supported, and connected.
“I kept thinking about our residents,” he said. “Many of them depend on us for routine and comfort.”
Knowing travel conditions could make it difficult for some team members to get in, Hakan made the decision to walk the half-mile to the community so he could be there to support both residents and his colleagues.
It’s a moment that reflects how he approaches his role every day.
“All my life, in every job I’ve had, I’ve tried to ask myself one simple question: if this were my family, how would I want them to be treated?”
Before joining Atria, Hakan spent years working in the medical field in his home country of Turkey. Today, that same sense of responsibility shapes how he shows up for residents.
When he first applied to be a driver, he didn’t expect it to become long-term.
“I thought it would be part-time, just two or three days a week since it was very close to my home,” he said.
But over time, something shifted. He built close relationships with residents and coworkers and began to see his role as more than a job.
“I didn’t know then that this work would give my life real meaning,” he said.
Today, Hakan helps residents get where they need to go and stay engaged in daily life, whether that’s through transportation or participating in Engage Life programming. His presence is steady, thoughtful, and grounded in genuine connection.
Melissa Woods, Engage Life Director, sees that every day.
“Hakan’s one of those people you can count on,” she said. “He doesn’t look for recognition. He just does what needs to be done.”
On the day of the storm, that mindset carried through. After arriving safely, Hakan focused on spending time with residents, helping with activities, and keeping the day moving in a positive direction.
“The storm stayed outside,” he said. “We spent the day together. Safe, warm, and even having some fun.”
At Atria Bay Spring Village, it’s this kind of everyday commitment that shapes the experience. Showing up. Looking out for one another. Creating a place where people feel supported, no matter what the day brings.
“You can count on me to show up,” Hakan said. “Even in the storm.”
