“It was absolutely fantastic, no other words for it. The food, the entertainment, the camaraderie and the sharing of love.”

These aren’t the phrases typically associated with a retirement residence – yet they perfectly capture the vibrant atmosphere at Atria Hacienda, where rainbow banners line the walls and multi-generational guests gather for moments of connection and joy. In a time when many older adults fear losing their sense of self and community, this Palm Desert residence shines as a vibrant example of what’s possible when personal expression is honored at every age.

What does remarkable senior living look like in 2025? At Atria, it means more than comfort and care. It means creating a place where stories continue, relationships flourish and people feel free to live as their truest selves.

Keeping the spirit alive with Pride bingo

In April, Atria Hacienda hosted its much-anticipated Pride bingo night, bringing together residents, their families and friends for an unforgettable evening. With vibrant decor, exciting prizes and a joyful atmosphere, the event reflected the community’s ongoing dedication to honoring individuality. The night also featured a dazzling drag show that left the audience cheering.

An ongoing commitment to inclusivity

Honoring diversity isn’t new at Atria Hacienda. Last June, residents collaborated with staff to organize a Pride-themed cocktail party that quickly became a highlight of the year.

“The idea came from our residents,” says Don Wendell, Engage Life® Director. “They wanted an event where they could invite their adult children and their partners, many of whom are part of the LGBTQ+ community. I knew it would be a hit.”

The warm summer evening was filled with laughter, heartfelt conversations and a deeper understanding across generations. Families gathered not only to enjoy great food and music but also to build bridges through shared stories.

Connecting across generations

For many older adults who grew up during eras less open to conversations about identity, gatherings like these offer meaningful opportunities for reflection and reconnection.

The cocktail party culminated in a high-energy performance by local drag artists Diva and Shante, whose renditions of classics by Tina Turner and Judy Garland brought the house down. Residents beamed with delight, dancing and singing along.

Osie, a resident who attended with her son and his partner, said, “It was absolutely fantastic. The food, the entertainment, the sense of community – everything about the night was filled with love.”

Moved by the response, the performers extended their time and closed with a heartfelt message. “To those who lived boldly so future generations could live freely – your legacy matters. You are seen.”

Living out loud, every day

Though June brings an added layer of celebration with rainbow flags and themed events, the ethos of inclusion thrives year-round at Atria Hacienda. Residents are encouraged to share their stories, embrace who they are and connect with others who appreciate and support them.

We recognize that aging is a deeply personal journey. At Atria, we create welcoming environments that honor each individual’s path and promote meaningful relationships.

Whether it’s making new friends, enjoying greater peace of mind, or striking the perfect balance between independence and assistance, Atria helps residents approach each day with dignity, pride and confidence. See for yourself by visiting an Atria community near you.
