Summary

Starting life in senior living can feel unfamiliar at first. See how two longtime residents help new neighbors feel welcome and begin to feel at home in assisted living.

Moving to senior living can raise many questions, especially about how long it will take to feel at home.

When Billie and Vivian discuss what life is like at Atria Kinghaven in Riverview, Michigan, they do not start with amenities or schedules. They start with the people.

From new residents to welcoming neighbors

Both women have called the community home for nearly eight years. But that word, “home,” did not come automatically. Vivian remembers the early days clearly.

“It was a challenge for me at the beginning,” Vivian recalls. “But everybody here is nice. That was very helpful for getting used to calling my new community home.”

For Billie, the shift happened in a moment. “It’s home now,” she says. “And I decided that the first day I was here, this is my home.”

Billie and Vivian understand that everyone experiences the move-in process differently. They know that everyone deserves to feel like they belong. That shared sense of belonging is what now shapes their role as Resident Ambassadors.

A warm welcome that can change everything

At Atria Kinghaven, Resident Ambassadors are volunteers who welcome new residents as they move into the community. The idea is simple but powerful. Resident Ambassadors help new residents feel less alone during a major life transition.

Vivian prefers to think of it in even more straightforward terms. “I don't want to say I'm just an ambassador. I want to do this as a friend.”

Vivian understands the strong emotions that people sometimes feel in the first few days. “When people move in, they might feel somewhat lonely.” So she introduces herself with a smile. She explains how things work in the community. She invites them to join her at a table.

“It can help people to feel better to come out for activities. Mingling with us is a great way to start,” Vivian says.

Billie shares that same welcoming tone and friendly disposition. “I like people. I love to be with people,” she smiles. She was offered the role of Resident Ambassador because she already had a habit of reaching out to others in the community. “It’s not difficult to be an ambassador. It’s just offering yourself as a friend.”

Life here, lived fully

A friendly welcome from Billie or Vivian carries weight because of their experience. Both women are active and visible in the daily life of the Atria Kinghaven community.

Vivian checks the agenda each morning, heads to the common areas and greets neighbors as she passes. “They make me feel good and I make them feel good,” she says of her daily greetings.

Billie rarely misses crafts or bingo. She chats with friends in the hallway. She notices when someone seems unsure or quiet and is always willing to help.

When one resident confided that her sons did not visit often, Billie gave extra attention to ensure that she felt included. Over time, small gestures turned into lasting friendships.

That is the heart of the Resident Ambassador Program. For Billie and Vivian, it is not about formalities. Rather, it is about genuine presence and connection. When they notice a new face in the dining room, they choose to offer a friendly hello.

For those considering a move, Billie and Vivian are living proof that a new community can become home. Sometimes all it takes is a friendly hello across the table to help someone feel they belong.
