Living safely and well in a COVID-19 world

The COVID-19 pandemic has forced us all to rethink the way we live, work and keep our families safe. At Atria, we're committed to combating the virus while maintaining the connection and engagement that is so vital to our well-being.

Timely testing

Knowing that testing would be key to controlling the spread, we actively sought a relationship with Mayo Clinic Laboratories to test our 13,000 U.S. community staff, in addition to private duty aides and other third parties working in our communities. With their support, we have administered nearly 40,000 tests and are running weekly testing clinics for the foreseeable future to test all new residents, new hires and residents who return from hospital and rehab stays.

Keeping Safe

Protecting the health of our residents

From the moment the reality of COVID-19 became clear, to thoughtfully planning to begin easing quarantine restrictions, resident safety and preventing the spread of the virus has been priority number one.

  • Spot quarantining

Although our communities have relaxed quarantine restrictions, when residents move in or test positive for COVID-19, they will be individually quarantined. While under quarantine, residents must stay in their apartments for 10 days where they will receive twice-daily temperature checks and symptom monitoring by a designated caregiver in full PPE.

  • PPE preparedness

When the majority of the world was experiencing PPE shortages, we formed key partnerships to make sure every community had N95 masks, eye protection, gowns, gloves, scrubs and disinfectant the minute they needed it. We teamed up with a chef coats manufacturer to make washable, sterilizable gowns for community staff, and we started making our own hand sanitizer, foaming hand soap and sanitizing wipes with help from Cardinal Spirits distillery.

  • Expanded telehealth

Right now, avoiding the hospital is integral for all of us to prevent exposure to the virus. To better protect residents from the risks associated with visits to outside hospitals, we have quickly secured technology and equipment – including smart TVs, BP monitors and pulse oximeters – so telehealth providers and local physicians can provide routine health care to residents without having to treat them face to face.

  • Contact tracing

The best way to stop the spread of the virus is to identify who it's coming from and the people they've interacted with. With digital contact tracing technology, we can quickly react to new virus activity, analyze tracing results in a few hours and respond with targeted testing clinics literally overnight.

Feeling Connected

Keeping families connected and informed

Maintaining contact with family and friends is vital to everyone's well-being. As the COVID-19 landscape continues to evolve, we also know how important it is to create an open line of communication between Atria communities and families.

  • Connecting virtually

When you can't be together in person, seeing a familiar face on a screen is the next best thing. Every community has tablets with cellular service, mobile TV carts and conference lines for residents to connect with their families and friends.

  • Visiting in person

A visit – even from a distance – can make a difference in someone's day. Depending on state guidelines, family and friends can come enjoy a social distanced drive-up visit, time together in designated outdoor spaces or inside resident's apartments wearing proper PPE.

  • Sharing important updates

Family members are always kept in the know. Frequent letters, email responses from our Coronavirus email hotline and personal phone calls from community staff are some of the ways we're keeping families informed.

  • Staying up to date every day

By logging in to the Atria Mobile app, families can easily find out how their family member is doing with daily temperature readings and COVID-19 symptoms screening. They can also view community updates and important contact information.

I am SO incredibly grateful to the staff at Atria. They all work so hard to see that their residents are looked after, cared for and entertained. During this extremely difficult time of COVID, they are putting their hearts and souls into making the best out of a difficult situation and keep everyone safe. We're blessed to know Mom is so well taken care of.

During a pandemic that no one could have predicted or be prepared for, Atria immediately protected their residents' health with everything in their power. Then, the challenge of keeping them engaged, connected and happy began. I cannot speak highly enough about this team. Their creativity, joy and fun have been contagious to the residents!

It gives my family and me such peace of mind knowing my dad is being so well cared for during this uncertain time. We appreciate how on top of things you were to put all the new temporary policies in effect to protect the health and safety of the residents and staff. The little extras have not gone un- noticed. My dad really enjoyed having the margarita cart

Staying Engaged

Staying engaged in daily life

We are thoughtfully planning for the day when residents can once again enjoy our programs and events in a group setting. Until then, we're continuing to offer new opportunities to learn and connect with one another from a safe distance.

  • In-apartment programs

While in their apartments, residents look forward to fitness and learning opportunities, guided meditation, indoor gardening and a variety of creative art projects. Themed food and beverage carts with coordinating events are another way our staff are bringing added touches of fun to resident's doors.

  • Dining together at a distance

Socializing with friends over a chef-prepared meal is one of life's most delicious pleasures. Select communities have started offering small group dining options with special seating arrangements so residents can safely eat in the company of friends and neighbors.

  • A breath of fresh air

A visit – even from a distance – can make a difference in someone's day. With face masks and proper social distancing, residents may stay active with walks, gardening and other outdoor pursuits. During times of quarantine, they can join walking programs accompanied by staff.
