Circumstances change. One thing never will.

People belong together. The COVID-19 pandemic has forced us all to rethink the way we engage with the world and each another. At Atria, how we stay connected is different right now. But why we do it is more important than ever.

Timely testing

Knowing that testing would be key to controlling the spread, we actively sought a relationship with Mayo Clinic Laboratories. With their support, Atria has administered more than 50,000 COVID-19 tests to every employee, resident and third-party agency working in our communities. We continue to perform 4,000 to 5,000 tests a week. Atria's turnaround time for test results is three to four days ndash; faster than the national average of seven days or more.

Keeping Safe

Protecting the health of our residents

As some Atria communities begin easing quarantine restrictions and welcoming new residents, preventing the spread of the virus remains as top priority. Through continued testing, contact tracing and safety protocols, we've built a foundation for bringing people back together – safely.

  • Spot quarantining

Although some communities have relaxed quarantine restrictions, when residents move in or test positive for COVID-19, they will be individually quarantined. While under quarantine, residents must stay in their apartments for 10 days where they will receive twice-daily temperature checks and symptom monitoring by a designated caregiver in full PPE.

  • PPE preparedness

When the majority of the world was experiencing PPE shortages, we formed key partnerships to make sure every community had N95 masks, eye protection, gowns, gloves, scrubs and disinfectant the minute they needed it. We teamed up with a chef coats manufacturer to make washable, sterilizable gowns for community staff, and we started making our own hand sanitizer, foaming hand soap and sanitizing wipes with help from Cardinal Spirits distillery.

  • Expanded telehealth

Right now, avoiding the hospital is integral for all of us to prevent exposure to the virus. To better protect residents from the risks associated with visits to outside hospitals, we have quickly secured technology and equipment –including smart TVs, BP monitors and pulse oximeters – so telehealth providers and local physicians can provide routine health care to residents without having to treat them face to face.

  • Contact tracing

The best way to stop the spread of the virus is to identify who it's coming from and the people they've interacted with. With digital contact tracing technology, we can quickly react to new virus activity, analyze tracing results in a few hours and respond with targeted testing clinics literally overnight.

Feeling Connected

Keeping families connected and informed

Maintaining contact with family and friends is vital to everyone's well-being. As the COVID-19 landscape continues to evolve, we also know how important it is to create an open line of communication between Atria communities and families.

  • In-apartment programs

While in their apartments, residents look forward to conference call book clubs, guided meditation, indoor gardening and a variety of creative art projects. Themed food and beverage carts with coordinating events are another way staff add touches of fun to residents' doors.

  • Social distance dining

Socializing with friends over a chef-prepared meal is one of life's most delicious pleasures. Select communities have started offering small group dining options with special seating arrangements so residents can safely eat in the company of friends and neighbors.

  • A breath of fresh air

Time outside can be especially therapeutic. With face masks and proper social distancing, residents may stay active with walks, gardening and other outdoor pursuits. During times of quarantine, they can join walking programs accompanied by staff.

  • Fitness opportunities

Exercise is integral to keeping the mind and body strong. Residents stay active with daily fitness challenges, small group workouts and – during times of quarantine - doorway and balcony exercise classes.

I am SO incredibly grateful to the staff at Atria. They all work so hard to see that their residents are looked after, cared for and entertained. During this extremely difficult time of COVID, they are putting their hearts and souls into making the best out of a difficult situation and keep everyone safe. We're blessed to know Mom is so well taken care of.

Staying Engaged

Staying engaged in daily life

We are thoughtfully planning for the day when residents can once again enjoy our programs and events in a group setting. Until then, we're continuing to offer new opportunities to learn and connect with one another from a safe distance.

  • Connecting virtually

When you can't be together in person, seeing a familiar face on a screen is the next best thing. Every community has tablets with cellular service, mobile TV carts and conference lines for residents to connect with their families and friends.

  • Visiting in person

A visit – even from a distance – can make a difference in someone's day. Depending on state and local guidelines, family and friends can enjoy drive-up visits, gathering in designated outdoor spaces or visits inside resident apartments, all with proper PPE and social distancing.

  • Sharing important updates

Family members are always kept in the know. Frequent letters, email responses from our Coronavirus email hotline and personal phone calls from community staff are some of the ways we're keeping families informed.

  • Staying up to date every day

By logging in to the Atria Mobile app, families can easily find out how their family member is doing with daily temperature readings and COVID-19 symptoms screening. They can also view community updates and important contact information.
