Bernice G. crossed two milestones off her list this year: turning 100 and becoming the first centenarian to have a crossword puzzle published in The New York Times.

Bernice, a resident at Atria Center City, is an award-winning crossword puzzle creator. She has published thousands of crossword puzzles in her 60-plus year career, including more than 150 in The New York Times. Bernice continues to construct puzzles today and has developed a passion for learning and educating others; she is actively involved in teaching Atria residents how to create puzzles. Most recently, she was featured in The Philadelphia Inquirer and The Huffington Post.

Coincidentally, Bernice celebrated her 100th birthday just a few weeks shy of the 100th anniversary of the first printed crossword puzzle.

When asked about the key to aging gracefully, Bernice replied, “Who ages gracefully?” Then, she laughed and gave a more serious answer: “Definitely working. Working keeps you young. I still work every day!”
