On May 2, 2014 Atria Richardson resident Mary M. celebrated her 100th birthday with family and friends. She was born in Chicago, where she met her husband Newton. The two were married for 55 years and both served in the Navy. Mary was a nurse during WWII and was stationed in the South Pacific and the Solomon Islands. She served in the Navy until she became pregnant with their daughter. She enjoys listening to dance music from the ‘40s and ‘50s, photography and gardening – winning several awards for her plants.

The mother of one is also the proud grandmother of five and elated great-grandmother of three. Mary’s first great-grandchild, Stephen was born on her 90th birthday.

Four generations of the family gathered with friends to celebrate the centenarian. The room was decorated with splashes of blue. Every table displayed a picture of Mary and some of her own photography.
